Suggestions relating to observing Mormon customs during medical treatment
(The Church or Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints)
Administering to the sick
As in Biblical times, it is the practice of the Church to administer to the sick. Usually two members of the local congregation who hold the priesthood would - at the request of the person who is ill, or of a relative - visit and perform the administration. One would anoint the sick person with a small amount of consecrated oil, on or near the crown of the head. The second person would then place their hands on the head of the individual and offer a prayer on behalf of the sick person. Some privacy for the administration would be greatly appreciated. Administering to the sick is given to all who request it and is not specifically reserved for the terminally ill or dying. Many members will find comfort from a visit from their Bishop or assigned 'Home teachers' and the patient or his relatives will know how to contact them. In an emergency, the phone number for the local church building can be found in the phone book.
Dietary Consideration
Church members live by a health code known as the Word of Wisdom. It warns against the use of stimulants and substances, which are harmful to the body, and promotes healthy eating. Because of this, Latter-day Saint patients will abstain from tea, coffee, alcohol and tobacco. However, some will bring in other beverages (e.g. Barley Cup), which simply require the addition of hot water. Hot chocolate, Ovaltine and other such drinks normally available on a hospital ward, are perfectly acceptable. Any prescribed drugs may be taken.
Taking the Sacrament in Hospital
The sacrament of bread and water (Latter-day Saints abstain from alcohol) equates to the Eucharist of other Christians and is performed each Sunday. All members who feel worthy may participate. Although it may be taken in hospital, it would not be regarded as essential for a sick patient.
Special Garments
Those Latter-day Saints who have undergone a special Temple ceremony known as the endowment wear sacred undergarments. These intensely private items will normally be worn at all times, day and night. They may be removed by staff in an emergency following an accident, but must at all times be considered sacred and treated with respect. Members will usually refrain from wearing them while in hospital. In the event of death, an 'endowed' member will be buried wearing these and other special clothes, and so members of the Church will come to 'dress' the body prior to burial, by arrangement with the funeral director. Members who have not been to the Temple are not required to wear such clothing.
